Fall Time in the Trucking World

As the weather starts to cool down and the nights get darker earlier, it is time to think about fall driving with your semi-truck and semi-trailer. Here are some things to help keep you safe out on the roads in the fall weather.

Falling Leaves

Have you ever been walking and slipped on wet leaves before? The same goes for tires on the road. As the leaves fall from the trees and it rains, the wet leaves stick to the ground and can cause your tires to slide. The leaves can become just like ice on the roadways.

Fog

As the weather changes, it becomes cooler and more damp in the mornings. This can cause there to be fog in the morning more than at any other time of the year, making it harder to see. It is important to make sure that all your lights are working properly to be able to see in the fog and in the evenings, as it gets darker earlier, too.

Direction of the Sun

In the fall, the sun sets differently than it does in the summer. It always tends to be brighter, larger, and more on the horizon as it sets. This makes it harder to see when the sun is shining so brightly in your eyes. Make sure to have provisions to help you see better when driving into the sun, as it can be blinding.

Wildlife

This is the time of the year when you see more wildlife out. As the weather gets cooler and we move closer to winter, animals are preparing to hibernate for the winter season. They are sourcing places to settle down, looking for food to store, and are mating. It is always best to keep an extra eye out to the sides of the road, as they may run out onto the roadway. Especially deer. With all the growth in so many areas, they are being run out of their habitat and are forced to find new places to live.

Early fall is a good time of the year to look ahead to see what you need to do to winterize your truck and dry van. Some areas of the U.S start getting winter weather a lot earlier than others, so it is always good to be prepared and start early.
